Our Waste Market Bag, handmade out of old rice sacks in Sri Lanka.

‘After the rice from the sacks is sold, the sacks either end up on the garbage dump or, like so much other plastic waste, are simply incinerated at home’.

Susi and Henry set up Rice and Carry in 2012 in Sri Lanka, with the mission of repurposing this waste and giving it a second life. I visited Sri Lanka in July and we met and discussed how we could turn this everyday waste into an everyday, functional bag for the cook.

Susi and Henry have recycled more than 60,000 rice sacks to date and employ 40 women with a secure job with fair pay.

The colours of each are the same, but the patterns are different (depending on the rice sack). So every bag is a one-off.

One rice sack makes one market bag.
